Contemporary Bedroom Furniture - How To Select What's Right For You

The selection of contemporary bedroom furniture is a tricky thing. Human nature is to put all sorts of pieces of furniture in a bedroom to make it cozy, but contemporary décor would not approve. So, let's look at the two things that are most important when selecting yours.

First it has to be contemporary. That means the pieces of furniture have sleek and crisp lines and give it a very modern or industrial feel. The furniture should also have plenty of room with the room looking border-line scarce, while still being functional.

Next, this is a bedroom we're talking about, so it has to feel like a bedroom. The most important consideration is the bed. This is the focus of the room and the part of the room you are going to use the most (thus the name of the room) make sure it's the centerpiece.
Now you need to look at the space you have in your bedroom and see how little of it you can use.

If we are working with a cavernous master suite, things will be just fine. As mentioned before, contemporary bedroom furniture is supposed to have space. Part of the contemporary look is that it is clean and clear of clutter. That means you need to be able to see a good portion of the floor space for this to work. Large bedrooms are not a problem as you can spread things out.

But if you have a smaller bedroom, you could hit a snag. Make a list of what you absolutely have to have. A bed, a pair of nightstands and a dresser. How big of a dresser do you need? Can you make do with one? Can you even make do with a smaller than regular one? What about a taller, thinner high-boy dresser? It will still offer a similar amount of storage while making a smaller footprint on the floor plan.

If you're worried about having enough storage space, think about hidden storage that you may be able to add. Why does your bed only have to be a bed? If you get a captain's style bed, it will have a set of drawers underneath that will allow you space to tuck more things away without it taking away from the open look of the room.

Don't forget the accents. Even once you have decided on the larger pieces for your bedroom, you are going to need other things, like lighting, and possibly a small table or chair. Take these items into account as you figure out just how much space is available.

When you begin your contemporary bedroom furniture shopping spree, you can take comfort in the fact that this is a timeless décor style, contemporary bedroom furniture that was created in the last century is still very popular, and will blend perfectly well with those new pieces you are purchasing. There are few other furniture styles where you can combine current and old pieces of furniture and still have a room that is looking completely fresh and new.

The Evolution of Sofa Beds

Sofa beds have been around for a long time. I am not really sure who the genius was behind the first sofa bed, or when it actually came into being, but I know that they have been around for quite awhile. We owned a used furniture store a few years back, and we had some old click clack sofa beds come into the store that looked like they were from about the 1950's. I thought that these were pretty cool, the back would lay flat to change the sofa into a bed.

Sometime later, perhaps the late '60's, but definitely by the 1970's, the traditional pull out sofa beds became quite popular. These may have been quite comfortable initially (though I have my doubts), but most of these had thin, 4" mattresses that did not have a very long life. It was not uncommon to feel a bar in the middle of your back when you had to sleep on one, not very conducive to a good nights sleep.

So, it is not surprising that futons became popular in the 1980's. When it comes to futons, you can get the cheap, discount version. Functional but not very comfortable since the mattresses are thin and have a short life span. But a good quality futon will last for a long time, having a good quality, thick (and sometimes even an innerspring) mattress.

But, the evolution of the sleeper sofa continues. The new traditional sofa beds on the market today are quite modern and comfortable.

Now, I have a good futon and it has served my family well for several years, but there are some things about it that I do not like as well as a traditional sofa that converts into a bed. Luckily, regular sofa beds have come a long way in the last 20 - 30 years. Don't get me wrong, I like my futon, but here are some reasons why I would like a traditional sleeper sofa.

  1. My futon looks nice, it has a beautiful hardwood frame and a thick mattress, but it really is better suited for a family room than the living room. A futon is simply more casual looking than a nice microfiber or leather sofa.
  2. The seat part of a futon tips slightly backwards, this is just the nature of the design of a futon. This really is not a big deal, but if you want to lie on the futon when it is set up as a sofa, it is not very comfortable because of the slant. Also, most futons have wood or metal arms, also not the most comfortable to rest your head on while lying down. And in our family during a movie night, someone always claims the couch as a place to lie, not sit on, to enjoy the movie.
  3. The new sofa beds available today are beautiful and trendy, and not only look good but are also comfortable. Some new fashions have also brought back the original click clack style of sofa bed. A good modern sofa bed is also very comfortable to sleep on, many manufacturers have tried to solve the old problem of the bar in the back.
  4. Finally, many modern sofa beds don't look like a sofa bed, but just like a really nice couch.
Sofa beds, like many other things, have really evolved over time. Though old styles have returned, it is with modern ingenuity and new levels of comfort. So, if you could use a sleeper sofa, but have been tentative about trying the new styles due to old misconceptions, I would encourage you to check out the new sofa beds on the market today, I bet you will be pleased!

It used to be kids bedroom furniture consisted of a bed and a dresser. Well, no more. Today's kids bedroom furniture is an adventure waiting to happen, whether it's on the high seas, in the jungles of Africa or around the ovals of NASCAR.

About a decade ago, the first race car beds came on the scene, Complete with steering wheel and faux racing slicks, the bed was the first kids bedroom furniture that was functional as well as extremely fun. Kids all over the world no longer dreaded going to sleep. Instead, they hopped into their bed and drove off into a night filled with dreams of winning at Daytona or Indianapolis.

With its success, it was inevitable that other manufacturers jumped on the themed kids bedroom furniture bandwagon. Now there are pirate ships, tree houses, princess beds and beds with slides to keep kids' busy before bedtime. Plus, it's not hard to get a child to go to bed on time when the adventure of kids bedroom furniture awaits them.

When creating a themed room for kids bedroom furniture, consider adding other pieces to the room to support the main pieces. If your son or daughter has friends over often, consider a bunk bed. The newer models of kids bedroom furniture offer a twin up top and a full size bunk below. Many even have desks tucked into the end for studying.

New ideas have fundamentally changed the way kids bedroom furniture is designed these days. This is particularly true with the traditional twin bed. Designers realized that space is always a premium for children of all ages and that the space above a bed usually goes to waste.

Their solution: Raise the kids bedroom furniture up on posts and use the space below for additional seating or as a workspace. Now kids have a place to study, play video games and work on hobbies in a space that used to be unavailable.

When selecting kids bedroom furniture for the home, be sure you keep in mind your children's interests and lifestyle. Choose a bed and other kids bedroom furniture that can grow with them over time or be handed down to their little brother or sister. You'll be amazed how fast the years go by and having kids bedroom furniture that can grow with the family is a good strategy.

Antique Drawer Pulls - Put Some Sparkle In The Bedroom

If you're due for a redo in your bedroom, antique drawer pulls may be the way to accomplish the new look you want, without being out a fortune in new furniture. While sometimes, your bedroom furniture may be past its prime, and ready to be replaced, it's also possible that the furniture is in great shape, just doesn't look quite right for the new decorative theme you have in mind. Many pieces of furniture are sold these days with normal knobs and pulls. While this may have worked before, if you now want to dress it up, changing the drawer pulls is an easy way to do it.

First you have to decide if the piece of furniture with new drawer pulls will be enough to make this room look the way you want it to. It may need a little more than that. You may need to strip the old paint off and start from scratch, making that dresser, nightstand or other piece look like a completely different furnishing. If you are going for a retro look, you can get some pink or turquoise paint and pop on a pair of antique drawer pulls to end up with a piece that looks like it may have been in your mother's home.

Next you have to find the right drawer pulls. There are two types you may choose from. The first are the real things. These are antique drawer pulls that really are as old as they look and are collector's pieces in themselves. These are very popular and with a high demand, and limited supply, it can be very costly to get the perfect knobs for your bedroom redo project. The other option is to get reproduction antique drawer pulls. These look like the real thing, but have been made more recently and therefore as much more affordable.

Once you decide which kind you want, you can start shopping. You want to look for the right style first. In today's world of everything at your fingertips, that's easy. You can hop online and do a search for 'antique drawer pulls'. You will most likely be overwhelmed by places that are ready to sell you knobs that look like they go from a few years ago back to the times of the pharaohs.

After you find a few you like, make sure they will fit. There are a number of different drawer pull sizes. You may need to measure the size of your current pull and where the holes are placed (if there were more than one) to see if they will fit. If you really like the pulls and they are not the right size for your drawer, you may need to take a more drastic measure. You can always drill new holes in your drawers to suit the antique drawer pulls, fill in the old ones, and then repaint the drawers. It seems like a lot of work, but in the end if the look you want is exactly what you have gotten, you will find it all worthwhile.
